This illustration by George Blake Lyle features a man balancing on a surfboard beside a woman crouched on her own board, both dressed in early 30s swimwear. Matson used art and design to promote Hawaii as an exotic, sun-soaked destination, intertwining island imagery with the emerging popularity of surfing. Lyle (1892-1940) was an American illustrator known for his commercial art.
