Wearing a green grass skirt and holding an ‘uli ‘uli, a traditional Hawaiian percussion instrument made from a hollowed-out gourd, filled with seeds, and decorated with feathers, this evocative illustration by John Kelly reflects the romanticized imagery of a Hawaiian hula dancer. Kelly’s technique blends stylization and naturalism: the dancer’s features are gracefully simplified, while the plant detail and delicate shading reflect carefully observed form. Kelly was known for art depicting the daily lives of Hawaiian people, hula dancers, and island scenes. Matson Lines and Hawaii-based hotels commissioned him to design menu covers, promotional art, and prints.
