This carefree photograph captures The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the legendary "Pink Palace of the Pacific," from the beachfront at Waikiki. It serves as a window into Waikiki at the height of its golden age, when the Royal Hawaiian stood as the centerpiece of island resort life.

Opened by Matson Navigation Company on February 1, 1927, The Royal Hawaiian quickly became one of the most photographed hotels in the world. Its Spanish-Moorish architecture and prime beachfront setting made it the jewel of Waikiki, attracting Hollywood stars and world travelers arriving aboard Matson's luxury cruise ships, including the S.S. Lurline, S.S. Malolo, S.S. Matsonia, and S.S. Mariposa. By the 1950s, the hotel had become inseparable from the image of Hawaii itself.
