Commissioned by Matson Lines, this menu cover composition features a Hawaiian woman in traditional dress, posed among tropical foliage that evokes a sense of island identity and cultivated exoticism. The design balances figuration, decorative patterning, and a refined color palette typical of mid-20th-century travel art. John Kelly was known for art depicting the daily lives of Hawaiian people, hula dancers, and island scenes. Matson Lines and Hawaii-based hotels commissioned Kelly to design menu covers, promotional art, and prints.
