In this vibrant mid-1950s photograph, passengers aboard the S.S. Lurline cast lei into the Pacific Ocean. The scene shows several figures clustered near the ship’s railing, one woman with an arm outstretched mid-throw, the lei suspended in the air between sea and sky. As a promotional photograph commissioned by Matson Lines, “Lei Cast at Sea” demonstrated a voyage and an experience of ritual farewell, myth, and destination. The act of casting a lei into the sea evokes the Hawaiian legend that if a lei reaches shore, the giver will return. This photograph thus bridges tourism, cultural performance, and visual storytelling in the mid-20th century.
