This painting by Arman Manookian commemorates the inaugural voyage of the S.S. Malolo, a premier luxury passenger liner of the Matson Lines. Manookian portrays the ship cutting through Pacific waters, its dramatic silhouette and bold color, while flying fish swim in the waves around it. The name "Malolo," meaning "flying fish" in Hawaiian, underscores the liner's role as a swift and glamorous link between the U.S. mainland and the islands. Beyond the vessel itself, the artwork captures the thrill of journeying to paradise—anticipation, arrival, and the enchantment of tropical adventure. Manookian (1904–1931) was an Armenian-American painter and illustrator, celebrated for his vibrant, expressive depictions of Hawaiian landscapes, culture, and maritime scenes.
