This colorful mid-century travel poster by Frank McIntosh, featuring a surfer riding a wave, embodies the spirit of leisure and adventure. Behind him, a traditional outrigger canoe filled with paddlers moves across the water, the iconic silhouette of Diamond Head rises in the distance, and a tropical fish swims among coral, reinforcing the exotic allure of Hawaii. Matson often leveraged visual design to attract travelers by blending cultural motifs with the promise of adventure. McIntosh (1901–1985) was an American illustrator and designer best known for his striking Art Deco–inspired artwork created for Matson Lines in the 1930s and 1940s.
