This early 20th-century poster depicts Duke Kahanamoku riding a surfboard, cutting through the waves with graceful motion. Kahanamoku (1890‑1968) is celebrated as the father of modern surfing, an Olympic swimmer, Hawaiian waterman, and ambassador of aloha. The Mid‑Pacific Carnival was an early festival in Honolulu intended to celebrate local culture, pageantry, sports, and tourism—one of the many events designed to promote Hawaii as an exotic yet accessible destination in the early 1900s.
