This piece commemorates Emma Claudina, a three-masted schooner built in 1882, and the first vessel operated by Captain William Matson. Emma Claudina was named in honor of Emma Claudina Spreckel and marked the origin of what would grow into Matson Navigation Company. In its early days, the schooner carried freight from San Francisco to Hilo, Hawaii — supplies, plantation goods, general merchandise — and returned with cargoes of sugar and tropical produce. The design (in archival prints) often shows the schooner with full sails, cutting through Pacific waters, or its silhouette in relation to the Hawaiian Islands, symbolizing the humble beginnings of Matson’s maritime enterprise.
