The “First Lurline”, a 400-ton brigantine, launched in 1887, five years after William Matson founded his shipping company. Matson named the ship after the mythical siren Lorelei. The image showcases the ship’s 12 sails, capturing the essence of late 19th-century maritime design and the era's romanticized view of ocean transit. It reflects the aspirations of a company poised to become a significant player in trans-Pacific shipping, bridging cultures and economies across vast oceanic distances.
