This richly illustrated map by Vladimir Bobri shows the maritime routes of Matson Liners through the South Pacific during the 1930s. The decorative lei of pink flowers that encircles smaller vignettes of tropical flora, indigenous people, animals, and landmarks suggests welcome, hospitality, and the exotic charms of Pacific life. The route lines trace the ships’ course across oceans, connecting island destinations with vivid color and stylized imagery. Matson Lines was instrumental in travel and trade between the U.S. West Coast, Hawaii, and various South Pacific islands.
