John Kelly's "Fisher Man" depicts a Hawaiian fisherman holding a line with his catch, positioned in front of a stylized coastal landscape. Beside him, a woman in traditional attire carries a small shark, evoking the rhythms of island life and marine sustenance. Silhouetted against an abstracted landscape, the piece blends realism with a romantic vision of island life, reflecting both the cultural identity of Hawaii and the era’s exoticized marketing of the islands to American tourists. Matson Lines and Hawaii-based hotels commissioned Kelly to design menu covers, promotional art, and prints.
