Charles Bartlett's cocktail menu illustration for the Royal Hawaiian Hotel features a solitary fisherman in the act of casting or gathering his fishing net. During the early to mid-20th century, the Royal Hawaiian commissioned bespoke artwork for promotional and hospitality materials—such as menus, brochures, and posters—to enhance the prestige of Pacific travel. Such illustrations helped frame Hawaii both as an exotic destination and as an extension of refined American leisure culture. Bartlett’s contribution here is part of that visual branding legacy.
