Edward Steichen uses dramatic, streamlined composition and vibrant color to evoke the romance and adventure of ocean travel in an era when ocean liners and promotional imagery shaped mainland Americans’ visions of the Pacific. The visual language draws on Art Deco tendencies such as clean lines and stylized forms to produce an aspirational scene. Steichen was a prominent photographer whose work lent prestige to commercial imagery; his involvement elevated the advertisement from simple promotion to artful interpretation.
