This striking promotion was used by Matson Navigation Company to market Honolulu and Hawaii to mainland audiences. The design of a surfing figure riding a dramatic wave functioned as both an advertisement and a visual narrative, which invited prospective travelers to see Hawaii as dynamic, bold, and enticing. The surfer motif connected to the emerging popularity of surfing, then a novelty in mainland eyes, and positioned the islands as a place of adventure and exoticism.
