Captured from the pier below, this reminiscent black-and-white photograph freezes the streamer send-off, one of the most beloved rituals of the golden age of Pacific travel. As Matson liner S.S. Lurline prepares to depart, a cascade of paper streamers connects passengers lining the decks above to the well-wishers gathered on the dock. For decades, Matson Navigation Company's famed "White Ships," including Lurline, Malolo, and Matsonia, carried passengers between the U.S. mainland, Hawaii, and the South Pacific. This image preserves that vanished ceremony in all its joyful, tangled beauty.
